Is Baby Getting Enough To Eat?

Of course you want your baby to be healthy and gain weight normally. We also want to be sure your baby is healthy - that is why we weigh and measure your baby.

Sometimes other people care for your baby during the day while you work or go to school. Here is a list of things to do and things not to do that you can share with anyone who takes care of your baby.

Things To Do

  • Feed baby when baby is hungry and stop when baby is full.
  • Hold baby during feedings. Also, cuddle, play and talk with baby during the day. Baby needs lots of stimulation and love.
  • Mix the formula right. Make sure you are adding the right amount of water. Read the mixing directions and follow them carefully.
  • Give baby enough formula. Talk with the nurse, dietitian or doctor about how much that is. Also talk about how much food to feed.

Things Not To Do
Check this list to be sure you are NOT doing these things.

  • No tea, coffee, Kool-Aid, soft drinks or sugar water for baby.
  • No candy, chips or other “snack” foods for baby.
  • No skim milk, low-fat milk or regular whole milk for baby.
  • Just formula or breast milk for the first year.
  • No “stretching” the formula by adding extra water.
  • No propping the bottle. Always hold your baby during feeding time.
