Helpful Hints for New Mothers
Being a new mother is a real job, as you know! It is a very important one, too. It is easier if you feel good and have energy. But sometimes it takes a while to get your old energy back.
Here are some ideas that can help get your energy back:
- Try to take it easy! Having a baby is hard work. Now give your body some rest. Just taking care of the baby and keeping the family fed is about all you should expect to do the first few weeks. Nap when the baby naps, if you can.
- You may be constipated for a few weeks. Drink lots of fluids (at least 8 glasses a day). Eat fruits, raw vegetables and whole wheat bread. Try prunes and prune juice. And a little exercise can help, like walking. Ask your doctor about a laxative if these tips don’t relieve your constipation. Your stitches won’t break when you have a bowel movement, so don’t worry about that.
- Eat right! Keep those good habits you had when you were pregnant! Take time to eat. Eat breakfast. Have at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. And if you need to lose weight, watch out for sodas and junk foods.
- Ask for help! Ask a friend or relative to grocery shop, cook or do laundry. Let your housework slide for a few weeks. Ask your older children for help, too.
