Feeding Your Baby
Here are our suggestions for adding solid foods
6 months - Infant Cereals
6 - 7 months - Strained Vegetables and Fruits
7 - 8 months - Juice in a Cup
8 - 9 months - Strained Meats and Egg Yolk
9 - 12 months - Chopped Table Foods
A suggested guide for a well-balanced diet, 0-12 months
This guide is to help you know how much of what foods to feed your baby every day. Your baby may eat more or less than these amounts.
Birth - 12 months
Breastfeed or give formula when baby is hungry.
Around 6 months
Breastfeed (6 to 8+ feedings) or give formula in 4 to 6 feedings of 6 to 8 ounces each.
Infant cereal: 1 to 2 tablespoons twice a day. Give it with a spoon.
6 - 7 months
Breastfeed (6 to 8+ feedings) or give formula in 4 to 6 feedings of 6 to 8 ounces each.
Infant cereal: 2 to 4 tablespoons, twice a day.
Vegetable: 2 to 4 tablespoons daily, strained.
Fruit: 2 to 4 tablespoons, once a day, strained.
7 - 8 months
Breastfeed (4 to 6+ feedings) or give formula in 3 to 5 feedings of 6 to 8 ounces each. Start to offer formula in a cup.
Infant cereal: 2 to 4 tablespoons, twice a day.
Vegetable: 2 to 4 tablespoons daily, strained.
Fruit: 2 to 4 tablespoons daily, strained.
Infant fruit juice: 2 to 4 ounces in a cup daily.
8 - 9 months
Breastfeed (4 to 6+ feedings) or give formula in 3 to 5 feedings of 6 to 8 ounces each. Continue to offer formula in a cup.
Infant cereal: 3 to 5 tablespoons, twice a day.
Vegetable: 4 to 8 tablespoons daily, strained.
Fruit: 4 tablespoons daily, strained.
Infant fruit juice: 2 to 4 ounces in a cup daily.
Meat group: 1 to 3 tablespoons daily, strained, plain. Can give egg yolk.
9 – 12 months
Begin chopped table foods such as green beans, peas, carrots, lean ground meat, peeled soft fruits, potato, cooked dry beans.
Breastfeed (4+ feedings) or give formula in 3 feedings of 6 to 8 ounces each. Increase cup feeding, decrease bottles.
Meat group: 3 to 4 tablespoons daily.
Fruit juice: 4 ounces, in a cup.
Fruit: 4 to 8 tablespoons daily.
Vegetable: 4 to 8 tablespoons daily.
Bread and Cereal group: 1/2 slice of bread, 1/2 cup infant cereal, other bread items, 3 to 4 times daily.
