Indigestion and Heartburn

Your baby is getting bigger and is pushing up on your stomach. This may cause indigestion and heartburn. Indigestion can be a simple upset stomach. Heartburn is a burning in the chest. It can be very painful and hard to get rid of. The best idea is to try to prevent indigestion and heartburn.

Here are some ideas that work to reduce indigestion and heartburn:

  • Eat small meals and eat them more often. This puts just a little food in the stomach each time you eat. Try 5 or 6 small meals a day.
  • Watch out for fatty foods! Fried foods, ice cream, pizza and other high fat foods can give you indigestion and heartburn.
  • Colas, coffee, spicy foods and chocolate sometimes cause problems.
  • Try to eat your meals without drinking anything. Drink your milk, juice or water about an hour later. This can help a lot.
  • Don’t lie down or bend over right after you eat. In fact, don’t lie down for about 2 hours after a meal. And when you do lie down, prop yourself up on pillows.
  • Eat slowly, chew well and try to avoid stress at meals.
  • Wear clothes that are loose.
  • Stop smoking or cut way down.
  • Listen to your body.
  • Do not eat foods that give you problems.
  • And don’t overeat!

If you still have indigestion or heartburn after trying these things, call your doctor or talk about it at your next visit.

Do NOT take antacids, home remedies, herbs or any medicine without talking with your doctor about it first!
